Thankfully, the recent Blade Runner 2049 movie was a great follow up to the original. It is a haunting movie and, like the original, it will take some time for people to truly appreciate it. The cyberpunk world it depicts is extremely difficult to pull off in a believable way. The mix of high tech and old, dirty tech along with the connection but disconnection of society can be seen around us even today.
If you are a fan of the cyberpunk genre, then we recommend watching the following 3 cyberpunk anime, which also paint a disturbingly believable vision of what’s in store for us.
First, you should check out Ghost in the Shell (1995). Released in the heyday of 80/90’s cyberpunk anime and adapted from the manga series of the same name, it has a resounding story and the imagery and ideas have influenced other great sci-fi works such as The Matrix and Ex Machina. Give the 2017 live-action adaptation a miss though.
Next, we recommend Akira (1988). The granddaddy of them all and considered by many to be one of the greatest animated science-fiction movies of all time. Make sure you watch the subtitled version though because the English dubbed version seemed to miss out on some of the story nuances. There are talks of this also having a live-action remake in the works.
And finally, our personal favourite is Cyber City Oedo 808 (1990). You can consider this a movie split into three parts with each part focussing on one of the three main characters but all tied together underneath. It has everything we love about anime: a rocking soundtrack, great action and a deeper philosophical message. You must watch the UK dubbed version though or you’ll miss out on the amazing theme tune and the outrageously coarse and cheesy dialogue.
So, we hope you liked our list. Track them down if you can – we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.
