No matter how good or bad the final game is, you can’t beat an amazing trailer to fuel the hype machine. Trailers in general are a pretty standard marketing trick to arouse curiosity and trigger an emotion in the viewers.
Movie and video game trailers differ though because movie trailers show scenes from the movie whereas video game trailers have to tell their own short story based on the game. It’s a challenging task to set the scene and tone of a game, give a rough idea of the background and struggle of the protagonist and hint at the gameplay, all in just a couple of minutes. It can be done though, and in quite a few cases the quality of the trailer far surpassed the game itself.
So, we come to what we consider to be the best game trailer of all time. Well, Tom Clancy’s The Division and Halo 3 both had expertly crafted trailers which ticked the boxes of arousing curiosity and evoking an emotion, but the king of all trailers to this day has to be the one for Dead Island (2011).
The trailer for Dead Island is so good that we actually don’t want to spoil it for you by telling you much about it but, suffice it to say, to pack so much emotion into just a few minutes is truly remarkable. The ending scene in particular, paired with the wonderfully atmospheric piano piece, never fails to bring a tear to the eye.
So, if you haven’t seen the trailer for Dead Island, check it out, and we think you’ll agree that it’s the best video game trailer of all time.
