A tricky one in time for Christmas. If you are writing “Xmas” instead of “Christmas” for a party, etc., is it “a” or “an” Xmas party?
The jury is out on this one. Some people demand it should be “an” Xmas party because of the “X” vowel sound, while others say that you would read it as “Christmas”, therefore “a” Xmas party would be correct.
Well, we’ll stick our neck out on this one and recommend using “an” Xmas party because of the “X” vowel sound as mentioned above. No other “X” words get any special treatment as far as we know.
Of course, you could avoid the issue altogether and simply not use “Xmas” at all!
So, have a wonderful CHRISTMAS and a happy New Year!
