By straying away from the usual blockbusters you can unearth some great hidden gems, and You Can Count On Me (2000) is certainly one of those gems.
It tells a simple tale of the relationship between a sister (played by Laura Linney) and her brother (Mark Ruffalo). She never moved from the quiet, little town they grew up in, while he wanders, seemingly aimlessly, from place to place. Their parents both died in a car crash while they were both still young, so they have always relied on each other for support.
The essence of the story is that, while he seems so lost, and she seems so settled, the idea of what is a correct, normal way to live is questioned, and that no matter who you are, you can’t escape life’s troubles. There’s a melancholy about the film, but it never gets depressing and, thanks to a great script performed wonderfully by the cast, portrays people in a believable manner. Overall, it’s touching and, like all good movies, has a message that sticks with you long after the closing credits end.
So, give You Can Count On Me a watch – it definitely has more to it than you might think.
